You're never locked into a platform or dependent on a subscription to keep your site online.

There is one important thing to understand about how custom sites work: your files live on a web server — a hosting service that stores everything and makes it accessible on the internet around the clock. When changes are made, those updated files are pushed directly to the server and go live in real time. You'll need a hosting plan for this — options like Netlify (free tier available) or shared hosting through Namecheap or Bluehost (around $3–$10/month) work well.

Two tools power this workflow. Visual Studio Code is the code editor where you open, edit, and push your site files live to the server. GitHub is a project management tool that stores and organizes all your code — your repository can be private or public, but it must be public if the hosting server pulls directly from GitHub to deploy your site. They work together, but they serve different roles.
