What Is Claude Code, and Why Does It Matter for Your Website?

Claude Code is an AI coding tool developed by Anthropic — one of the leading AI safety companies in the world. Think of it as a highly skilled development partner that never sleeps, never loses track of a detail, and can translate a design vision into clean, hand-written HTML and CSS in a fraction of the time traditional development takes.

I use Claude Code as part of my workflow to build every custom website from scratch. That doesn't mean the AI is designing your site — I am. It means the technical implementation is faster, more precise, and free from the bloat that slows down most template-based sites. Every line of code is intentional, and because it's reviewed and refined by a human designer (me), the result is a site that actually reflects your brand instead of a generic starting point dressed up with your logo.

Templates Are Borrowed — Custom Code Is Yours

When you build a website on Squarespace or Wix, you're starting from a template that thousands of other businesses have also used. You can change the colors, the fonts, and the photos — but the underlying structure, the spacing logic, the animation behavior, and the layout decisions are all someone else's. There's a ceiling on how unique it can look, and experienced eyes can often tell exactly which template you used.

A custom HTML and CSS website has no such ceiling. Every section, every hover effect, every transition and gradient is written specifically for your brand. The spacing reflects your aesthetic. The color logic is yours. The typography hierarchy is built around your voice, not a default setting. Nobody else on the internet has the same code, because it was written for you.

Performance Nobody Can Match with a Page Builder

Template platforms load a lot of invisible overhead — scripts, frameworks, plugin logic, and tracking pixels that run even when you don't need them. A custom HTML site loads only what's on the page. No bloat, no platform overhead, no third-party scripts slowing you down. The result is a site that loads faster, scores higher on Google's Core Web Vitals, and keeps visitors on the page long enough to actually contact you.

Speed matters more than most business owners realize. Google uses page speed as a ranking factor. And a visitor who clicks your link and waits more than three seconds for it to load is statistically likely to leave — and go to your competitor instead.

AI-Assisted Doesn't Mean Cookie-Cutter

One concern I hear sometimes is: "If AI helped build it, doesn't that mean it looks like every other AI-built site?" No — and here's why. Claude Code is a tool for writing code, not for making design decisions. The design — the layout, the color story, the mood, the hierarchy, the brand personality — all of that comes from me and from you. The AI helps me implement it faster and cleaner. It's the same way a skilled carpenter might use a power saw instead of a hand saw: the tool is faster, but the craftsmanship and the vision are still entirely human.

What you get is the speed and precision of AI-assisted development combined with the creative direction of a designer who has built dozens of real-world brand identities for small businesses. The best of both worlds.

You Own Every File — But You Do Need a Server

One underrated advantage of a custom HTML site is ownership. With a template platform, your content lives inside someone else's system. If they raise prices, change features, or shut down, your site is at risk. With a custom site, you receive every file — the HTML, the CSS, the images, all of it. You're never locked into a platform or dependent on a subscription to keep your site online.

There is one important thing to understand about how custom sites work: your files live on a web server — a hosting service that stores everything and makes it accessible on the internet around the clock. When changes are made, those updated files are pushed directly to the server and go live in real time. You'll need a hosting plan for this — options like Netlify (free tier available) or shared hosting through Namecheap or Bluehost (around $3–$10/month) work well.

Two tools power this workflow. Visual Studio Code is the code editor where you open, edit, and push your site files live to the server. GitHub is a project management tool that stores and organizes all your code — your repository can be private or public, but it must be public if the hosting server pulls directly from GitHub to deploy your site. They work together, but they serve different roles.

If that sounds like more than you want to learn, that's completely fine — not everyone needs to. I handle all updates and deployments at $100/hour (USD). You focus on running your business; I'll keep the site maintained and current.

The Bottom Line

Custom HTML and CSS, built with AI-assisted precision, gives your business a website that is faster, more unique, and more fully yours than anything a template platform can offer. It's the approach I specialize in — server-hosted, hand-coded, and built specifically around your brand from the ground up.

Every site I build through Vannie Designs is custom-coded from scratch. No templates. No drag-and-drop shortcuts. Just clean, intentional code that makes your business look exactly the way it deserves to.
